The 146th Open Championship

The clock is ticking as Sefton gets ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to the borough for The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale.

Millions of pounds is set to boost the local and regional economy as Sefton hosts the Championship at Royal Birkdale from Monday 17 July 2017.

More than 200,000 people are expected at the global sporting event at one of the finest links courses in the UK.

It is the tenth time Royal Birkdale will host The Open and preparations are well underway to welcome sports fans from across the world to Sefton and the wider Liverpool City Region.

Royal Birkdale last hosted The Open in 2008 and the links course forms part of England's Golf Coast which also includes many other Sefton golfing venues.

Cllr Ian Maher, Labour Leader at Sefton Council, said:

"On behalf of Sefton and the wider Liverpool City Region, I would like to extend a warm welcome to visitors, players and the world's media attending The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale.

"It gives me great pleasure as Sefton sees hundreds of thousands of people head to our wonderful borough to watch and enjoy a major sporting event that will be watched by millions of people around the globe.

"With an event of this magnitude, we have worked incredibly hard in the run up to the championship to showcase the borough to its full potential. Both residents and businesses have really got into the spirit of the event and we are sure there will be a warm welcome and atmosphere to remember throughout the week.

"There are a number of events going on in Southport town centre during the championship and shops will be opening late. Our restaurants and bars will be alive and I hope everyone embraces and enjoys the party atmosphere across the whole of Sefton!

"We are confident that everyone attending the championship and watching on TV will see Sefton as an incredibly diverse and stunning place to visit. Hopefully a lasting legacy of 2017 will enable more and more people to consider visiting the borough in the future. Please spread the word!

"By hosting one of the largest sporting events in the world, we will significantly boost our local economy with many businesses reaping the associated benefits.

"We want the world to see we are very much open for business and for everyone to marvel at all our assets and fantastic coastline which forms part of Royal Birkdale's famous links course.

"2017 is also the Year of Sefton's Coast as we celebrate everything associated with our amazing coastline. Royal Birkdale golf course sits beautifully along the coast and I hope many people attending the Championship will see this as a platform to explore the area further.

“Sefton also sits proudly in the heart of England’s Golf Coast and there are also many other fabulous courses nearby to play and marvel.

"During the championship please follow us on twitter @seftoncouncil @visitsouthport and follow #TheOpen, #OpenTravel for advice, information and travel tips.
