Feast of Fiddles: Silver Jubilee Tour

The Feast of Fiddles band-waggon trundles merrily on in its Silver Jubilee year. Born in Nettlebed on Valentine’s Day 1994 as a one off special concert, Feast of Fiddles has done 25 spring tours, 24 festivals and has 7 CDs to its name. Not bad for a bunch of old folk-rockers!
This is a band of friends that puts on a show of huge dynamic range performed with passion, joy and a liberal dose of fun. Fiddlers Peter Knight (Gigspanner, Steeleye Span), Chris Leslie (Fairport Convention), Brian McNeill (Battlefield Band), Ian Cutler (Bully Wee), Tom Leary (Lindisfarne) and Garry Blakeley (Band of Two) add the large range of fiddle playing styles to the rock back-line of guitars, keyboards, sax and accordion – all held together by legendary drummer Dave Mattacks.
A live music entertainment like no other on the circuit which is guaranteed to be enjoyed by even the most doubting of friends dragged along!
£20 / £10 under 16's plus booking fee. Booking fee is £1 per ticket online/phone.

Mark Watson: The Infinite Show

Cluster-bombed with yoghurt on Taskmaster, half-killed on Bear Grylls’ Celebrity Island, Mark Watson returns to what he’s best at: being indoors.
Inspired by the mostly alarming state of the world his children are growing up in, and a genuine, urgent desire to do something about it, this show is about empathy. 99 percent of the world’s population is made up of other people: why can’t we understand them? As scrawny and impassioned as ever, one of the UK’s most beloved and thinnest acts offers some suggestions, with his usual notoriously high joke-and-rant-per-minute rate.

£19 plus booking fee. Booking fee is £1 per ticket online/phone.

Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum’s PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

Court and Spark: The Joni Mitchell Songbook

Singer, songwriter, painter, poet, activist and voice of a generation, Joni Mitchell is an essential part of the soundtrack to the twentieth-century. She grew up with folk music in the 60s, she railed against injustice in the 70s – she turned her autobiography into song in the 80s and reinvented herself in the 90s.

Court and Spark: The Joni Mitchell Songbook, brings together five of the North West’s most experienced musicians to celebrate the kaleidoscopic musical world of Joni Mitchell. The band is led by the many voices of Jade Thunder– equally at home in the simple folk music melodies of the late sixties and the cool jazz sounds of Joni’s later albums. Toni Hughes is on keyboards, with Martin Byrne on bass and David Crilly on guitars. Daz Jones drives the band on drums and percussion.

The Court and Spark show will take you on a musical journey that will probably mirror your own journey through life, from Ladies of the Canyon, Clouds, For the Roses, Blue and Court and Spark, to the cool, evocative sounds of Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Mingus and Turbulent Indigo.

“Condemned to wires and hammers, strike every chord that you feel / That broken trees and elephant ivories conceal”. – Joni Mitchell, Judgement of the Moon and Stars

NOW Festival: Sefton 2019

Rise Up: Adverse Childhood Experience

Be prepared to laugh, cry and learn from the young people of Sefton as they share with you their performing & creative arts work, that is high quality and bursting with creativity!

Merseyside Youth Association SPACE has engaged schools and youth groups from all across Sefton to create performing arts pieces for the NOW Festival. This year’s theme is Rise Up: Adverse Childhood Experience and will be a very exciting festival including drama, dance, film and music performances.

With an estimated 1 in 10 children and young people now experiencing some form of mental distress, Sefton’s young people want to make their voices heard! With the performing arts as their tool, they have done just that.

The concept of the NOW Festival came from a desire to engage young people in creative discussions around the topic of mental health. For many, creative arts are a way to express and challenge opinion concerning the things that matter most to society. The NOW Festival is a Merseyside wide festival and is entering its fourth year. NOW Festival Sefton is very excited to be collaborating with the Atkinson and bringing the festival to Sefton!

Mawkin

Mawkin’s extraordinary brand of boisterous folk music is one to warm hearts, minds and feet. Built on a solid traditional foundation and influenced by the swagger of 90s indie rock and Bellowhead-style brouhaha, this five-piece’s sound comes alive with a large dose of Essex-boy energy on stage. No surprise then that MOJO regards them as ‘unconditionally mighty’, and Q Magazine declares them ‘invigorating and highly inventive’. The 2019 album and tour ‘Down Among the Dead Men’ is a confident stride forward for a band that’s gathering serious momentum.

A vibrant, energetic and gloriously funny musical from the award-winning Story Pocket Theatre. ANiMALCOLM combines physical theatre, puppetry and the company’s outstanding storytelling style to bring David Baddiel’s magical and wonderfully comic story to the stage.

Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is NOT full of is stuff Malcolm likes. Such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday.

The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year Six school trip, which Malcolm never thought his parents would pay for. And yet there he is, on the bus, heading to……oh no. A farm.

After a bizarre school trip unlike any other, Malcolm begins to understand animals more deeply than anyone. But will he end up the same as before? Because sometimes the hardest thing to become is…yourself.

English comedian and folk singer Richard Digance tours the UK in 2019  doing what he loves best, telling stories, playing the guitar and singing songs. This year there’s a whole new show having shaken off the nostalgic trip of 50 years last year.

With a BAFTA Nomination as TV Entertainer Of The Year and Gold Award recipient from The British Academy of Composers, he turned his back on showbiz for his first love of music and live performance. – 4,000 live shows, 62 British tours, 14 books, 3 stage plays, 32 albums and nearly 4 million YouTube visits says it all.

He composed the audio book music for Bill Bryson’s best-seller ‘The Road To Little Dribbling’. Richard’s Animal Alphabet poems, serialised by The BBC, are used as English Teaching Aids in 14 countries from The USA to Swaziland and his guitar instrumentals are used on numerous TV productions. He supported Robin Williams at The London Palladium, and supported Steve Martin in The USA. On TV he played guitar with Queen’s Brian May, Status Quo and The Moody Blues. Yes, after 50 years he’s still doing what he loves. He also composes incidental and soundtrack music for Film, TV, Radio, Documentaries and Audio Books.

The Lindisfarne Story

The Lindisfarne Story is an affectionate and enthusiastic celebration of one of the UK’s most original and successful groups. Written and performed by former front-man Billy Mitchell and founder member Ray Laidlaw, the show takes the audience on a trip through fifty years of the Geordie group’s history from its 1960s beginnings in the pubs and clubs of Tyneside to the concert halls and festivals of the present day.
The story is told through the groups classic songs, rare and unseen video, audio clips and private photographs linked together with tall tales and scurrilous gossip.  From Whitley Bay to Frisco Bay, from Rothbury to Glastonbury, the Lindisfarne Story is a brilliant evening’s entertainment.
Since 2015, the Lindisfarne Story has toured the UK with over 120 concerts to critical acclaim.  It has been performed in theatres, arts centres and festivals plus a history making show on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and another on a North Sea cruise.

Justin Moorhouse: Northern Joker

These days Justin’s not certain about anything apart from his uncertainty – Brexit looms, it appears the Cold War is being rebooted and that’s before we begin to worry about what’s happening in America…..closer to home he’s starting to feel redundant as a parent. One kid is leaving home, the dog is getting older and doesn’t need much walking, and the youngest kid hits thirteen and cancels the family subscription to The Beano.

On top of this the golden age of the Northern straight white male comedian has gone the way of the dinosaurs. How will he adapt if he wants to survive? What next for this Northern Joker? What can he talk to his daughter about now she cares little for Dennis the Menace and the Bash St Kids? Hang on. Perhaps nothing has changed that much. When he was thirteen, the Russians were scary, the White House was a madhouse and he’d never been to Europe anyhow. Thinking back this was when his reading habits changed too, more Dark Knight than Desperate Dan, more Catwoman than Minnie the Minx. Perhaps our heroes never went away….they just waited for us to pick them up again. Perhaps she just needs a different type of comic.

£14 / £5 unwaged (book at Box Office, proof required) plus booking fee. Booking fee is £1 per ticket online/phone.

His music has won him many awards and in 2014 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. He is accompanied by the ‘A’ Team, comprising pianist Bob Hall, widely regarded as the UK’s finest blues and boogie exponent, and diminutive dynamo Hilary Blythe on bass.

Respect to Aretha

Life-long Aretha Franklin fan and power-house vocalist, Letitia George stars in this heartfelt and uplifting dedication to the Queen of Soul.

Aretha Franklin’s extraordinary career as a singer and songwriter spanned over sixty years. She rose from church gospel singer to international stardom at a young age and is widely accepted as the finest female soul singer of our time. Her talent has always been unequalled. Massive hits including 'A Natural Woman', 'Say a little Prayer', 'Chain of Fools', 'Until You Come Back to Me', 'Think', 'I Never Love a Man', and of course ‘Respect’, will ensure that Aretha’s legacy will continue forever.

Whilst Letitia George will always be remembered for her breath-taking performances on series four of The Voice, she has gone on to forge an enviable reputation as one of the most passionate and hardworking soul singers around. Aretha’s sad passing has inspired Letitia and her outstanding backing band to attempt the seemingly impossible. Very few singers could ever do justice to the Aretha Franklin songbook… but Letitia George manages to capture the very spirit!
