Retrofit for the Future and the European Regional Development Fund

The RetroFIT for the FUTURE project will retrospectively fit low carbon solutions to homes to ensure they are fit for the future. This will be achieved by improving the thermal performance and energy efficiency of properties, along with support for residents to ensure that they understand and know, how best to use the products and measures that have been installed in their homes.

The aim of the scheme is to deliver improved thermal efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, reduce fuel poverty and improve the aesthetic look of the homes that are benefitting from the project.

The project is receiving up to £2,376,416 of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.  The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is the Managing Authority for ERDF. Torus, Magenta Living and One Vision Housing are delivering 7 schemes to properties in the Liverpool City Region by Summer 2020. Over 500 dwellings in total will have an improved energy consumption classification.

The proposed works include:

Innovative & Traditional External Wall Insulation

Underfloor Insulation

Innovative Electric Heating Systems

Alongside the retrofitting works the scheme will include innovative monitoring intended to test the performance of properties comparing pre-and post-improvements, this information will be used to inform future retrofitting proposals.

Benefits: Residents benefit from living in warmer, more energy efficient homes, which may help to reduce fuel poverty. Reducing energy consumption and improving comfort levels. Landlords will benefit by having more energy efficient housing stock.

The Liverpool City Region (LCR) will benefit from having more retrofitted homes to contribute to CO2 /Green House Gas emission targets and the drive to become a low carbon economy.

The RetroFIT for the future project will lead to many direct benefits such as an increase in the number of energy efficient homes in the Liverpool City Region. A reduction in CO2/Green House Gas emissions contributing to regional, national and international climate change targets. The project will create a platform of exemplar projects to support future adoption of innovative products into mainstream housing management programmes. 

RetroFit for the Future is a successor scheme to the work that Viridis, via Sefton Council delivered on the 2012 REECH project. The project is being led by Sefton Council, whom are the secretary and project arm of Viridis Energy Saving. Viridis partners include all the main registered housing providers and Local Authorities across the Liverpool City Region.  The RetroFIT for the Future project is a partnership between Sefton Council, Torus (formerly Liverpool Mutual Homes) Magenta Living and One Vision Housing. 

Update: Retrofit for the Future has seen the completion of one of its seven schemes. The Magenta Living Bromborough External Wall Insulation scheme has been completed by Sustainable Building Services Ltd. Although it’s been a challenging year for the construction industry, this scheme has been a success and incurred minimal delays thanks to proficient project management and a dedicated workforce on site. 81 homes have been improved and will feel the benefit of increased warmth and lower heating bills.
