What does the Council expect us to do around any capacity issues experienced during COVID-19?

Firstly, please notify the Council as soon as possible if your service experiences any significant capacity issues such as high levels of staff absence. Please contact;

Testing Latest

The Government has said its priority is testing patients to inform their clinical diagnosis and that people can apply to get a test if you’re in one of the following groups:

  • all essential workers including NHS and social care workers with symptoms (see the full list of essential workers);
  • people over 65 with symptoms;
  • people with symptoms going to work who cannot work from home (for example, construction workers, shop workers, emergency plumbers and delivery drivers);
  • anyone who has symptoms of coronavirus and lives with any of those identified above.

Additionally, they are testing:

  • social care workers and residents in care homes, with or without symptoms, both to investigate outbreaks and, following successful pilots, as part of a rolling programme to test all care homes (see the guidance for care home residents and workers in England);
  • NHS workers and patients without symptoms, in line with NHS England guidance.

This means anyone in one of these groups can find out whether they have the virus.

Apply for a coronavirus test

You can select a regional test site drive-through appointment or a home test kit.

Referral through your employer

Employers can refer essential workers for testing if they are self-isolating because they or member(s) of their household have coronavirus symptoms.

To improve access to tests and courier collections, the Government has launched a new portal.

Essential workers referred by their employer, will receive a text message with a unique invitation code to book a test for themselves or their symptomatic household member(s) at a regional testing site.

Across all these testing methods swab samples are analysed at our labs and the result is communicated back to the individual.

Applying for tests for a care home

Care home managers registered with the Care Quality Commission  can apply for Coronavirus testing kits to test the residents and staff whether they have coronavirus symptoms or not.

To apply, they will need:

  • the care home’s CQC registration number
  • total number of residents, including number of residents with coronavirus symptoms
  • total number of staff, including agency staff
  • contact details

Day Care services update

The Council is reviewing its approach to day services and how it can support people following the impact of social distancing measures, in line with other local authorities.

The Council will continue to meet people’s statutory need for support under the Care Act, but the type of service they receive may differ. This is because there may be fewer places available in building-based day services.

Spaces will be prioritised for those who require a building-based service because of family carer needs, personal care or support and supervision which may not be available in other types of social care services.

The Council’s Social Workers are currently contacting people who attended day services or their families prior to lock-down to look at how their needs can be met.

Bus transport will also be affected as social distancing measures are put in place.

Respite care will also be affected by the safety measure required to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Council is working with New Directions at this time to identify how and when these services may be safely delivered while these measures are in place and that once we are able to resume delivery, people who attend and their families are aware of the changes and risks before returning.
