Climate Emergency Annual Report for 2025-26 shows the way forward

Sefton Council has shared an update on its green activities in the 2025-26 Climate Emergency Annual Report.

Published every year, the Annual Report details the work the Council has done to progress towards its goal of being Net Zero for carbon emissions by 2030.

It shows a 43% decrease in carbon output since 2019, which is a drop of 4,854 tonnes of emissions.

Working towards the future

This year’s headline figures show a gradual decline in the Council’s emissions, although a variety of projects aimed at reduction have taken a major step forward.

That includes work under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, where over £40 million in funding has been unlocked to upgrade public buildings across the City Region.

It is helping buildings like Bootle Library act more efficiently, with the project introducing low-carbon heating and adding elements such as LED lighting and improved insulation.

The Meadows Leisure Centre and Dunes Leisure Centre are benefitting from solar arrays, while a promised installation for Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre has been completed since the report was published.

Brightening up Sefton

Progression in the LED Street Lighting Project means that over 26,000 converted lanterns and more than 5,000 new lighting columns now help to light the way across Sefton.

Meanwhile, over 100 households will have a warmer winter because of support from the Healthy Green Homes team, which secured £185,000 in funding to deliver heating repairs, replacements and safety checks.

The Council’s Annual Report also sets out targets for 2026-27, which includes seeking additional funding for major projects and considering further decarbonisation routes.

Councillor Joanne Williams, Sefton Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said: “Since declaring a Climate Emergency in 2019, we have committed ourselves to tackling climate change and setting an example by reducing emissions and cutting energy bills wherever we can.

“We're pleased to have reduced emissions by 43% in just seven years, but we’re continuing to be ambitious and aiming for Net Zero status for Council operations.

“The Annual Report shows that a lot of work has gone on in the past year that has set the foundations for even more reductions to emissions in the short, medium and long term.”

The Annual Report can be found and read in full on the Sefton Council website.
