Community Unites to Tackle Litter in Sefton
07 May 2025 3min read
Volunteers from Formby continue to come together to help clean up litter and keep the local environment clean.
Great British Spring Clean
Their latest clean-up coincided with the national campaign the Great British Spring Clean ran by charity Keep Britain Tidy, last month.
Organised by local ward councillors, this litter-picking event was among several where participants of all ages have collected waste from locations across Formby. Equipped with gloves, bags, and litter pickers, volunteers joined the councillors in scouring the local area to collect several bags of rubbish.
Community spirit
Three pupils from nearby Formby High School also joined in showcasing the strong community spirit in tackling litter.
Councillors have been working with the Council’s Street Cleansing Team to address litter issues in pedestrian walkways across Formby throughout the year.
Recent clean-up efforts in Formby town centre have seen them working alongside dedicated volunteers with support from the Council’s Street Cleansing Team.
The environment belongs to everyone
Organised litter picks are part of the annual Great British Spring Clean campaign, which has been spreading the word that the environment belongs to everyone. Since the campaign launched, millions of #LitterHeroes and volunteers have united to help tackle litter. Last year, the army of #LitterHeroes pledged to pick more than 425,000 bags of litter across the country.
250 bags of litter
This year the Street Cleansing team helped to collect over 250 bags of litter.
Litter-picking is a simple action that makes an immediate and visible difference to the environment in which you live.
In fact, 97% of people surveyed after 2024's campaign agreed they felt they had made a difference to their local area, and 86% said they felt part of a national movement that is taking action to tackle litter.
Good of our community
Cllr Christopher Page, who represents Ravenmeols Ward in Formby expressed his gratitude, stating:
“It is inspiring to see people come together for the good of our community. Keeping Sefton clean is a collective effort that involves both the Council’s services and local people. Each time we go out and clear an area it shows me just how much we can achieve when we work together.”
Organise your own clean-ups
Local residents are encouraged to continue their litter-picking efforts by joining future events or organising their own clean-ups. Anyone can get involved and volunteer in Formby through contacting local councillors.
Raising awareness
