Next steps confirmed for Crosby's former Carnegie Library

Local business Cunard Construction has put pen to paper on a deal to manage the running of the historic Carnegie Library in Crosby.
The Construction firm has signed a Lease agreement with Sefton Council to restore, manage and transform the Grade II listed building into an innovative flexible office space and family restaurant.
Local restaurateurs Moose Coffee are set to partner in this exciting project – returning home to Crosby with a new flagship eatery.
The exciting news follows a lengthy planning process, including consulting with the local community in 2022.
Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy & Skills, said: “Carnegie Library is a valued asset for both the Council and the local community, and its heritage status is widely recognised.
“I am delighted that the lease has been signed over to a local business that can now begin restoring such an important asset within the heart of Crosby.
“I very much look forward to Cunard Construction bringing the building back into use, reaching its full potential, and serving our valued communities.”
Peter Backhouse from Cunard Construction said: “Cunard Construction is proud to lead the sympathetic restoration of such a vital piece of Crosby’s heritage. Our skilled craftspeople will restore Carnegie’s intricate period features, including the library’s iconic façade and ornate interior. The renovation will include measures to improve the building’s environmental performance without compromising its historic character.
“The Carnegie Library is more than a building; it is a testament to the community’s enduring values of learning and connection. Collaborating with Moose Coffee and Unit 4 Architecture, we are excited to ensure its legacy continues for future generations. Our £1 million investment underscores Cunard’s commitment to preserving Crosby’s historical landmark. Incorporating modern infrastructure to ensure accessibility and functionality, once completed, the revitalized Carnegie Library will provide a unique space for Crosby’s residents and visitors alike.”
A spokesperson from Moose Coffee said: “As we look back over 18 years, it’s almost unbelievable to see how far Moose has come. In 2006 the Liverpool restaurant scene was a world away from what it is today—missing the vibrant, diverse breakfast culture we’d fallen in love with during countless trips to the USA. We envisioned a concept that could capture the magic of those American breakfasts, somewhere that fed our love of the countless delis and cafes we visited.
“With that we set out to open our own modern diner, it would eventually become Moose.
We are thrilled to be reopening Moose in the historic landmark that is the Carnegie Library and even more satisfying that we are able to open again on College Road our spiritual home. It’s taken a long time to navigate all the restoration conditions but the works are now in full swing and we are thrilled to be part of this fantastic partnership with Sefton Council and Cunard Construction. We look forward to seeing the building back to its former glory and welcoming you to Moose in this restored, iconic building.”
