During 2024-25, Green Sefton’s Tree and Woodland team planted over 700 new standard trees.
Tree planting has a vital role to play in the Council’s climate action work which, in time, will reduce the amount of carbon in our atmosphere and contribute further net carbon reductions. Over the past five years, the total of trees planted is more than 7,500.
The Council also works in partnership with organisations like the Mersey Forest with woodland planting across Sefton, and community groups who would like to support this activity in their area.
Cllr Mhairi Doyle, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “Sefton is a clean, green and beautiful place to live and the Council is dedicated to maintaining its green spaces which includes planting new trees and looking after the existing 120,000 trees in the borough’s parks and lining its roads and highway.
“Our small but expert Tree and Woodland team, which is part of our Green Sefton service, has done a brilliant job this season, overseeing the planting of hundreds of new trees across nearly all of our wards.
“Not only does this enrich our already green borough, continued tree planting contributes towards our continuing action on climate change by preserving and enhancing ecosystems to promote biodiversity.”
Decarbonisation
The natural environment is a crucial component of Sefton’s decarbonisation efforts. Natural landscapes can absorb and store carbon which not only help mitigate climate change but also contributes to improved air quality and reduced flood risk which is important for a coastal borough.
Sefton's Tree Team
Our Tree and Woodland Team consists of 4 qualified Tree Officers and 1 assistant tree officer with a combined experience of well over 50 years in urban tree stock management. Health and Safety is the highest priority and tree work, or removal is only undertaken when it is necessary in the interests of public safety, such as the felling of dead trees or the removal of trees with a serious structural defect. All tree work is carried out by a specialist external contractor.
