At their November meeting, Sefton Councillors reaffirmed their commitment to tackling racism and encouraging unity across the Borough. This followed the appalling actions of a mindless minority in recent months, which saw racist graffiti appear in the Borough.
Condemned
At November’s full Council meeting, a notice of motion was agreed that condemned the recent racist graffiti and reaffirmed Sefton’s commitment to being a Borough where all people are treated with dignity and respect.
This latest motion builds on Sefton Council’s previously agreed Unity Motion, reaffirming the Borough’s unwavering commitment to opposing racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms. Every resident of Sefton has the right to feel safe, valued, and included in our communities.
Acts of racism have no place in Sefton
Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said:
"These appalling acts of racism have no place in Sefton.
“They undermine the values that bind our communities together. We stand united in condemning hate and discrimination in all its forms.
“Our message is clear: Sefton is a borough where everyone should feel safe, respected, and proud to belong. We will continue to work tirelessly with our partners and residents to remove these hateful messages and to promote unity and inclusion."
Notice of motion
The notice of motion confirmed the council will:
- Support Merseyside Police in investigating these incidents thoroughly.
- Ensure prompt removal of racist or hateful graffiti on public property and assist private owners where appropriate.
- Work with schools, community groups, and partners to deliver anti-racism education and strengthen community cohesion.
- Encourage residents to speak out against racism and report hate incidents.
- Express solidarity with those affected and reaffirm Sefton as a borough where dignity and respect are paramount.
The meeting came just days before faith leaders, political leaders and families joined together to take part in the Walk of Unity in Southport aimed at building bridges, not barriers.
