Sefton Council’s Cabinet receives update on sustainable transport funding

Sefton Council’s Cabinet received an update at today’s meeting on the tens of millions of investments in transport projects in the borough.

As part of the Transport for City Region (TCR) settlement, Sefton Council will be receiving a share of £1.6 billion in funding to improve journeys across the region.

Investment in Sefton

The funding will support transport across the whole of the borough, from funding improvements in Bootle town centre and in Southport to creating new walking and cycling links all over Sefton.

The funds will also help further works on highway maintenance and safety schemes.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council said: “I really welcome the investment for transport in Sefton as well as the further city region.

“This funding lets us continue our bigger projects like supporting the transport infrastructure around Bootle town centre and schemes in Southport that will make travel easier for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to move around the area. This is key to regeneration, supporting new housing, and improving our towns.

“The funding will also let us fund lots of other smaller, but just as important, improvements across the whole borough from highway maintenance, safety schemes, and connecting up new walking and cycling links to help support local journeys that aren’t done in the car.

“A great example of the work we can continue to do with this funding is the Bootle School Neighbourhood work which engages with schools and the wider community to find out what improvements they need and then implementing them, benefitting everyone locally.”

Improvements across the city region

As well as benefitting from tens of millions of direct investment in Sefton schemes, the TCR settlement will help fund improvements across the city region that residents in Sefton will benefit from. This includes bus franchising which gives more control over fares, routes and timetables and accessibility upgrades on the rail network.
