Sefton Council is reinforcing its commitment to providing a safe and secure working environment, free from any form of discrimination or abuse, for all staff and elected members with the launch of its Zero Tolerance Policy.

Commitment to combat abuse

The Policy highlights the Council's commitment to combating any and all forms of violence, aggression, and discrimination in the workplace. It sets out clear expectations for both the public and staff.

The Zero Tolerance Policy makes it clear that acts of violence, verbal abuse, any form of aggression, will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The same goes for creating a hostile or intimidating environment against employees and elected members.

Fostering an environment of equality

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council said: "The Policy is vital for elected members and staff because no-one should have to come into work and experience abuse. This is why, we are committed to fostering an environment of equality, diversity, and inclusion, both within the Council and across the Borough.

“As part of our approved strategy and action plan, the introduction and robust implementation of a Zero Tolerance policy against discriminatory behaviour has been and continues to be a priority.”

Increased risk of abuse

Some employees and members may be at an increased risk of encountering abusive behaviour due to their role. The Zero Tolerance Policy has been developed to ensure they get the support they need to handle aggressive or violent situations in the workplace and to ensure effective response and action where those situations arose.

The Policy includes guidelines for creating a safe working environment, encouraging the reporting of incidents. It includes supporting anyone who experiences discriminatory or abusive behaviour.

Reporting incidents

All are encouraged to report any incidents of aggression or violence. This enables the Council to take action, review risk assessments, and provide appropriate support.

There is specific guidance for racial abuse and discrimination towards staff and supporting guidance related to all protected characteristics will be developed by the Council.

Specific guidelines for Councillors

The policy also includes specific guidelines for elected Council members who face increasing levels of intimidation, harassment and abuse in public office.

Empowered to raise concerns

Cllr Atkinson, continued: “It is important to have an open and transparent culture where our colleagues and members feel empowered to raise concerns through any appropriate channel, be it line management, workforce groups, or leadership teams.

“While we are pleased with the progress made, we are determined to improve, both as an employer and a service provider.

“Across the board, councillors and leaders alike are dedicated to fostering a workplace and community where Sefton continues to be a Borough for everyone."
