Sefton Council and The R&A hosted a successful engagement event last week focused on preparations for The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2026.

Residents, community groups, representatives from local businesses and the Mayor of Sefton came together to learn more about the opportunities and upcoming plans surrounding this major international sporting event.

Importance of community involvement

Team members from The R&A and Sefton Council attended the event and spoke with residents and others. They emphasised the importance of community involvement as the borough prepares to host one of the world’s most prestigious golf championships.

Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, share their views, and hear updates on event planning, transport, local benefits, and future engagement activity.

Feedback shaping preperations for landmark championship

The feedback gathered during the community engagement events will play a vital role in shaping preparations for this landmark championship. And it will help ensure that the benefits are shared across our communities.

A huge moment for Sefton

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr June Burns said:

“It was fantastic to see so many residents and local businesses engaging so positively with the plans for The Open’s return to Royal Birkdale. This is a huge moment for Sefton, bringing global attention and real opportunities for our communities.

“Your feedback, ideas, and questions are vital, and we’re committed to ensuring that everyone has the chance to be involved as preparations continue.”
