VE Day message from Sefton Council Leader Marion Atkinson

As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Sefton Council Leader Marion Atkinson has spoken about what this anniversary means to her and to people across Sefton.
She said:
“Today we are marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe.
It is a time for celebrating and remembering.
Celebrating how like-minded countries came together to combat a regime of tyranny and oppression. And remembering the millions who gave their lives or suffered serious and life-changing injuries fighting to protect those freedoms.
Remembering the many men women and children killed and maimed in attacks such as the air raids that, over eight nights in May 1941, saw Bootle became one of the most bombed places in England.
And celebrating the spirit that saw local people who come together in the face of those attacks, in which over 1,000 people were killed or injured and over 80% of houses damaged or destroyed.
Celebrating
- the bravery of fire watches who used stirrup pumps to tackle fires,
- of wardens who ventured into collapsed buildings to save residents,
- of boy scouts who carried messages by bicycle when the phone lines went down
- of members of the Women’s Voluntary Service who ran rest centres in which bombed out families sought refuge and comfort.
And, ultimately, celebrating the freedoms we all enjoy.
So, I hope everybody has a good day how ever they are marking this important anniversary.
Times like this make me proud. Proud of what we are as a country, of what we are as people and communities and proud of what we are and always have been as Sefton.”
Cllr Atkinson also reiterated the importance of also remembering and caring for all those who have served this country since World War II.
She continued:
“The Council takes its commitment to the Armed Forces Community and veterans very seriously. Our Defence Employer Recognition Scheme achieved a Silver Award, and we have set our eyes on Gold.
“Just recently, in a motion at full Council, we confirmed our recognition of the challenges faced by veterans and welcomed the essential work carried out by our partner agencies such as Veterans in Sefton.
“And we confirmed our commitment the provision of accessible housing and support services to them and other specific groups such as care leavers and victims of violence.”
On Friday 9th May, Sefton Council will be hosting an event at Bootle Town Hall for guests from local legions, and military organisations. And a dedicated flag will be flown at Bootle and Southport Town Halls from Thursday 8th to Monday 12th May.
