Review of sole occupier discount

Council Tax sole occupier discount review 2024

As a result of the recent review of Council Tax sole occupier discount, almost 1,300 households have notified Sefton Council of changes in their circumstances which mean they no longer qualify.

During the next phase of the review, the Council will now be working with NEC Software Solutions to carry out a further sole occupier discount review. The company will use credit checking records to find out how many adults live in a property. If they determine that a Sole Occupier discount is being paid wrongly, it will be stopped and any additional payment due backdated.

NEC Software Solutions will be writing to some residents who receive the discount to check whether they are still eligible for the discount.

We’re asking residents to update their details through an online form or by phoning the dedicated helpline included in the letter. Your letter will also include your unique password.

The service is full managed by NEC, so make sure you use the online form or the dedicated helpline - our contact staff will not be able to update your details.

If you have received a letter from NEC and don't respond, you risk having your discount removed.

We'll write to residents whose discounts need to be removed with updated details of their Council Tax bills once the review is complete.
