Freshfield Heath is a beautiful nature reserve which hosts a number of species in its rare habitat. Freshfield Heath is the single largest lowland heath site in the north west of England.

Freshfield Heath’s birch and pine woodland is a home for goldcrests as well as red squirrels. There is also a host of insects to spot such as Dragonfly species including southern hawker, brown hawker, emperor, black-tailed skimmer and ruddy darter jostle for position with blue-tailed, emerald and common blue damselflies.

Common lizards are regularly seen during spring and summer, while rare sand lizards have also been recorded on site.

There is also a small colony of water voles that lives in the Wham Dyke!

Always check the safety signage and flags present before entering the water on the coast. And if you have any questions, the friendly lifeguards are happy to chat. More info can be found: Water Safety
