Cycling is the perfect way to explore Sefton. From the coast to the picturesque towns and beautiful countryside with views stretching to the horizon, there are many wonderful opportunities for you to cycle around the area and visit some of the fantastic places we have in the Borough.

Whether you have never ridden before but are keen to learn, are already an active cyclist but want to ride with a group, look for new routes to try or you’re looking to grow your confidence, you will find plenty of information below and also in our quarterly Sefton Walking & Cycling Newsletter.

Sefton Walking & Cycling Newsletter

Sefton’s Walking & Cycling newsletter provides a complete diary of walking & cycling events delivered across the Borough including those run by our partner organisations.  The newsletter is produced on a quarterly basis and is available in hard copy from Health Centres, Libraries, Community Venues and Leisure Centres throughout Sefton. Its also available in our Useful Downloads section.

Cycling Routes

Sefton has many cycling routes ideal for leisure cycling as well as getting from A to B.  A lot of our routes are family-friendly and we have routes for all abilities and tastes.  Routes are available in paper form and can be collected from the Eco Centre in Southport, alternatively, the routes can also be downloaded from our cycling routes page.

Bikeability -  Bikeability is the Department for Transport’s flagship national cycle training programme for schoolchildren in England. Bikeability cycle training is a practical training programme, which provides schoolchildren with life skills and enables them to cycle confidently and competently on today’s roads.

Bikeright! (Liverpool) -  Bikeright offers Free cycle training to Merseyside residents and have 100's of free places available on cycle skills courses for adults across Merseyside.  Beginner, intermediate and advanced courses are available to suit any rider and individually tailored are also offered. You'll need to live, work or study in Merseyside to qualify.

Sustrans UK - Sustrans works with schools to encourage active travel (cycling, walking or scooting) among students. It also works with employers and local authorities.

British Cycling  The largest cycling organisation in the UK and the national governing body for cyclesport.  Cycling UK governs cyclesport and inspires and supports people to cycle regularly.

The Highway Code - The Highway Code is a set of information, advice, guides and mandatory rules for road users in the United Kingdom. Its objective is to promote road safety. The Highway Code applies to all road users including pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists, as well as motorcyclists and drivers. It gives information on road signs, road markings, vehicle markings, and road safety.
