Completed Phase 1 - Sussex Road and Bispham Road Junctions

Phase 1 of Southport Eastern access is complete. Construction started in March 2025 and is complete, with snagging works ongoing into early 2026.

The first Phase of Southport Eastern Access delivered junction improvements at:

  • Bispham Road Junction
  • Sussex Road Junction

Aims of Phase 1

The scheme implemented improvements that make it easier for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to walk and move around the area.

Phase 1 focuses on junction improvements.

The work has improved capacity at the junction for motorists, and this will help prevent nearby residential streets being used as rat runs.

This change will make the residential streets quieter, safer and more pleasant places to be, especially benefiting local schools.

Changes

The removal of the left turn for motorists on Bispham Road junction. With the addition of signalised crossings the removal of the left turn improved traffic flow. Traffic modelling found the left turn was not heavily used.

Both junctions have had the carriageway widened to improve queuing capacity. This will improve traffic flow and help lower congestion.

For pedestrians on both junctions signalised crossings have been introduced, improving safety for those walking or wheeling in the area.

The junction improvements have added a lightly segregated cycle lane leading to the junction to give cyclists a safer approach to the junction. Added road markings for an advanced cycle stop at the junction ensure cyclists do not end up in a blind spot at the junction.
