Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are Income Based benefits paid to people to help them meet the costs of rent and Council Tax. The amount of benefit you receive will be based on your rent or council tax liability, the size of your family, your income and some other circumstances.
As part of Welfare Reform, most working age people will have their rent paid directly to them as part of Universal Credit. Some people will be able to get their rent paid to their landlords.
Also, as part of Welfare Reform, Council Tax support has become a local scheme. Please see the Reference Guide to Benefits and Tax Credits for 2019 - 2020.
