Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can find answers to questions you may have on the regeneration:

The vision has been developed by Sefton Council alongside independent advisors  following consultation with residents and stakeholders. It aims to create a vibrant, sustainable coastal destination that enhances the visitor experience while protecting Ainsdale’s unique natural environment.

The Council has taken time to ensure the vision reflects community feedback, aligns with environmental priorities and is supported by independent assessments such as the structural survey of Toad Hall and the marketing of The Sands to ensure a well-informed and deliverable plan.

The Pontins site is leased, and Sefton Council is in ongoing discussions with the leaseholder about its future. The site is seen as integral to the regeneration vision, with ambitions for high-quality accommodation and a world-class visitor destination.

The Sands has been subject to a marketing exercise to ensure the Council secures best value and finds a partner aligned with the regeneration vision. This process takes time to ensure the right outcome for the community and the site.

The Council is close to agreeing a disposal, but full details will be shared once confirmed and approved under the Council’s financial procedures. The proposals include new hospitality and visitor accommodation, improved links to Sands Lake, and enhancements like upgraded boardwalks and signage.

Toad Hall has been deemed structurally unsafe and beyond viable restoration. Independent surveys, conducted via drone due to safety concerns, confirmed its severe state of disrepair, making refurbishment unfeasible.

Sefton Council recognises the importance of public art in the area and has ambitions for new public art as part of the wider regeneration, which could reflect local heritage and wildlife. The sand lizard mural on Toad Hall was always intended as an interim feature while plans progressed, and we are grateful to the talented artist Paul Curtis for creating this striking piece that has brought colour and character to the site during this transitional phase.

A business case for the demolition of Toad Hall and the installation of surface car parking will be developed and approved in line with Sefton Council’s financial procedure rules

The regeneration vision is focused on enhancing the area for all users, and any developments will be subject to planning permissions and consultation. No immediate impact is anticipated from the demolition of Toad Hall on the Southport Boat and Angling Club’s new building, and we will engage with the club at the appropriate time to ensure their needs are considered as plans progress.

Longer-term ambitions will take time, there are short-term opportunities, such as the demolition of Toad Hall and new car parking that can be progressed sooner. Sefton Council are aiming to issue an update on plan progression early 2026.

Consultation exercises have been conducted with residents and stakeholders, further updates and opportunities for engagement will be shared as plans progress. If you have any questions you can get in touch at ainsdalegateway@sefton.gov.uk
