Les Transformations de Southport phase 1 was completed at the end of 2025.
Future phases will improve the spaces connecting to the Promenade and waterfront.
Changes
Since January 2025, the area around Market Street, King Street and Eastbank Street have been transformed, with big changes including the pedestrianisation of Market Street and making the adjoining King Street one way.
Further changes to improve the look of the streets included:
- Footway widening
- New footway paving
- New Kerbing
- New carriageway materials
- New Street Furniture
- Tree planting
- Rain gardens and planters
- Improved pedestrian crossings
Aims
The vision for Les Transformations project is to create an accessible, well connected, and high-quality public space.
As a result:
- More footfall between all areas of the town centre,
- Support businesses in attracting and retaining customers,
- Improve the health and wellbeing of communities through encouraging active travel,
- Encourage people to stay longer or return more frequently, therefore supporting the vision for the town
The work has created a more pleasant shopping, dining and event experience. This is to encourage more visitors to spend longer in the area.
Wider pavements and improved crossing points on Eastbank Street also help better connect the Market Quarter to Chapel Street, Lord Street and the rest of the town centre.
The changes create a more accessible town centre for all.
Investing in the visitor economy
The scheme is part of investing in Southport’s visitor economy to improve the streets and support the vision for the town, improving the look and feel. It creates a better visitor experience and helps encourage more private investment and strengthens the visitor economy.
Supporting businesses and looking to the future
Changes like the pedestrianisation of Market Street creates an opportunity for events and markets. This encourages visitors like families to an area to feel safe away from traffic and creates opportunities for future events.
Wider pavements support additional footfall on busy days without feeling cramped. It helps encourage people travelling into town to walk, wheel, or cycle around the area.
Social Value
Throughout the scheme, the Council have worked with contractors Balfour Beatty to generate social value and create lasting impact after the construction has finished.
Nearly £700,000 of social and local economic value has been generated, 89 hours volunteering in the community, engaged 470 students in workshops, career talks and curriculum support.
