Land Charges

Make a land charge search

You can download a copy of our Local Search Request Form or send us a completed LLC1 and/or CON29 Form.

Alternatively, you can use the National Land Information Service (NLIS), a government approved and regulated, electronic land and property searches portal.

For your information, The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has this month published guidance for the general public on “How to buy a home” and “How to sell a home”. This guidance has been developed following meetings last year with stakeholders including the Local Land Charges Institute.

Local Land Charges Registers and searches of them were introduced by the Land Charges Act 1925.  The register and the ability to make searches of it were designed to ensure that purchasers of land or property are not caught out by the existence of obligations or restrictions known as 'charges', which are binding against successive owners, by local authorities. The registers form a property-based information system. A search result will include any entries recorded against the property being searched - typically, these could include Smoke Control Orders, Conservation Areas, Tree Preservation Orders and financial charges where the Council is able to recover any money owed to it.

Land Charges can be defined as a restriction imposed on the use of the land, and a local land charge is binding on successive owners or occupiers of the land or property, for example conditions imposed when planning permission is granted, Conservation Areas which restrict permitted development, or Smoke Control Orders made under the Clean Air Act, restricting which type of fuel may be burned.

Our normal turn around time is 7-10 working days.

To book an appointment for a personal inspection of property information without charge, please telephone our contact centre on 0345 140 0845.

An appointment will be allocated to you to access the data. We will endeavour to meet requests within 7-10 working days, however as these requests will be considered under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 we will ensure that the 20 working day statutory deadline is achieved.

You can access the information needed to complete a land search under the Environmental Information Regulations at the locations shown in the list.
